Civilization V is a highly complex and layered game. Before the aforementioned benefits can be attained, the game must be implemented in a staged and sustainable way. Some tips that will help:
- Keep the settings as simple as possible to begin. I suggest the settings below.
- Take your time and get to know the game intimately!
Before you begin, with your students, spend considerable time setting the context of the game with inquiry questionsQuestions such as:

Have students investigate these questions deeply, as they can frame the game as you play.

Now, you are ready for the collaborative part! I would suggest the following game set-up to begin:

- Civilization V gives you the option of beginning at a variety of eras. Start at the beginning, as the complexity increases as the time period advances.
- Set the size of the game to the smallest option and set the number of players to the minimum. Again, this limits complexity at the beginning.
- Devote substantial time to game play in the beginning, as this is necessary to progress to advanced play.
