The first step to assessment, is alignment with your own provincial learning outcomes.
Here is a sampling of applicable outcomes, taken directly from the Alberta Grade 9 Social Studies Program of Studies, to illustrate some of the potential of Civilization V in the classroom.
Assessment can begin as early as with the independent tutorials.
Outcomes:9.2.3 appreciate the impact of government decision making on quality of life
9.2.6 assess, critically, the interrelationship between political decisions and economic systems by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues: - How do government decisions on environmental issues impact quality of life (i.e., preservation, exploitation and trade of natural resources)? (PADM, ER) |
Learning Activities:Use of journaling, blogging, or keeping and participating in a wiki, with prompts, can demonstrate growth of learning. For example:
1) How did you decide where to develop your city? What factors impacted your decision? Why? How do you think these decisions will impact your citizens? 2) Consider where we live; what are some benefits to this location? What are some drawbacks? Why? * Prompts can also be brought into the classroom for small and large group discussions. |
In each iteration, it is possible to focus on different outcomes. For example, as play advances and decisions bear more weight (such as inciting war), focus may shift to:
Outcomes:9.S.4. demonstrate skills of decision making and problem solving:
- take appropriate action and initiative when required in decision-making and problem-solving scenarios - participate in and predict outcomes of problem-solving and decision-making scenarios - propose and apply strategies or options to solve problems and deal with issues - propose and apply new ideas and strategies, supported with facts and reasons, to contribute to problem solving and decision making |
Learning Activities:Assessment in this case may be based on a combination of:
