Aside from the challenges discussed in "Challenges of Gaming", other practical challenges may be present. These might include:
Access to hardware/ software The hardware requirements to run Civ 5 are beyond the capability of most machines located in a school that are more than 2.5 years old. You need a decently good sound chip, graphics card, CPU and unused memory to run the game. In addition, the game runs about $35 per copy.
|
TimeNot only do you have to spend considerable time with this game before implementation, but a minimum of 1.5-2 hours per week is necessary to engage deeply. I might suggest devoting the better part of one afternoon per week to this aspect of your Social Studies curriculum.

JustificationYou will undoubtedly have to justify your use of this game in your classroom to administration, parents, students, and colleagues. Be prepared to do so! The benefits are becoming more and more accepted and acknowledged! Some of these are discussed here.
